From Hutchinson newspaper obituary:
Joan Marie Hopping died May 13, 2015, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. She was born July 17, 1940, in Winterset, Iowa, the daughter of John R. and Marian E. (Tigner) Ross.

She graduated from Sterling High School in 1958, and received her Bachelor of Arts in elementary education from Wichita State University in 1969. Joan received her master's degree in reading from Wichita State University in 1993. She began her teaching career at Fairmount Elementary in Wichita. Then for more than 20 years she taught and retired in 2006 from Graber Elementary in Hutchinson.

On Aug. 22, 1959, she married Jerold L. Hopping in Sterling. He preceeded her in death on April 28, 1992. Joan was a lifelong member of KNEA, NEA, Hutchinson Area Retired School Personnel Association, and Kansas Association of Retired School Personnel. She was selected as Intermediate Teacher of the Year in Hutchinson in 2000-2001. Then she was nominated for the Disney Foundation Award in 2002-2003. Furthermore, she was a five time nominee and awarded entry into "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" in 1998, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006 -- an award she was very proud of because the selection was by former students.

She is survived by: her son, John W. Hopping IV and wife Courtney of Carrollton, Texas; daughter Lori Klaassen and husband DuWayne of Hutchinson; four grandchildren, Katelyn and Kendra Klaassen, Garrett and Quinn Hopping; a sister, Janet Aves and husband Don of Garden Plain; aunt Alice Sumner and husband Jim of Derby.

Funeral services will be 10:30am Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Countryside Baptist Church, Hutchinson, with Pastor Ron Kyker presiding.
