ELLSWORTH - Howard "Skip" Errington Spencer, Jr., died May 11, 2015, at his residence. He was born in Boston, October 03, 1923, son of Howard Errington and Stella Ardelia (Wing) Spencer, Sr.
Skip was raised in Winthrop, MA. He received his BS degree with Distinction from UMO, graduating in 1949. His military service interrupted his college when he served in the US Army during WWII with the 10th Mountain Division - Ski Troops from 1943-1944.
Skip married his first wife, Margaret L. Overhults during the war in 1945. They were married for 30 years and they had one daughter and 7 sons.
During 1949-1950 he received his Masters in Wildlife Management from Utah State. Then Skip served in the Korean War in Okinawa from 1950-1953 with the 29th Inf. Reg'l Combat team. After the war Skip worked as a regional biologist for the State Of Maine in Rangley and did the first work on the black bear. He later became Water Fowl Project Leader for the State of Maine and his office was on the UMO campus and he served as a guest lecturer in the School of Forest Resources.
He married Carole Ann Preiss in 1975 beginning their lives together. (Carole's parents were Charles Priess (died 1952) and Doris M. Priess Clausen (died 2016).
Skip then served as Chief of the Game Div. in Augusta for the state. In his final years of employment, he became Director of Wildlife Research for Maine Fish & Wildlife retiring in 1984.
He spent his retirement doing the things he loved, sailing his friendship sloop "Summer Wind", participating in races and the retired Skippers Races out of Castine. He and Carole enjoyed hunting and fishing with his dogs by his side. He enjoyed skiing, fly tying, trapping and woodworking. Skip was very proud of the 21ft. Alpha Chamberland Sailing Dory that he built to transport all his children in. They had many family events at the family cabin at Wilson Pond, North Monmouth. Carole and Skip loved to travel in their RV and went to Newfoundland, Labrador, Canadian Rockies and Alaska among many the many trips. They wintered in the Ocala National Forest in Florida.
He was a member of the Atlantic Waterfowl Council, National Assoc. of 10th Mountain Div, New England Alumni Chapter - past president 1989-91, Ducks Unlimited, Mt. Desert Sailing Association, Commodore 1988-1990, Patten Lumberman Museum, Friendship Sloop Society, The National American Legion, Bagaduce Chorale, and the original Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Hancock County and a member and past Deacon of the First Congregational Church of Ellsworth where he helped build and renovate the organ. He was a volunteer at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital working in the maintenance department and dept. of special events.
Skip is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Carole; a step-son, Jeffrey R. Miller, Camas, Washington; a daughter Cheryl A. Schissel and husband, James, Pembrook, MA; 7 sons, Howard E. "Bud" Spencer III, Washington D.C., Stephen W. Spencer and wife Libbey Seigars, Whitefield, Stanley C. Spencer, Golden, CO., Randall C. Spencer and wife Jan, Hampden, Roger W. Spencer and wife Torey of Cannan, Mark R. Spencer and wife Linda, Champlain, N.Y. and Timothy S. Spencer and wife Tracey, Riverside, CA; 16 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 2 cousins, Gayliean Magruder and Diane Wing.
He was predeceased by his brother, Richard A. Spencer.
Private interment will be at Leeds Cemetery, Leeds.
