Mazie Spiller Burkett, 92, a resident of Deerfield Retirement Community since late 1999, died peacefully May 9, 2015. She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd (Buck) Burkett, and leaves a daughter, Bonnie (David) of Greensboro, NC; a granddaughter, Sara Ellen, of Greenville, SC; a brother, Mott (Helen) of Greenwood, SC; a nephew, John (Lisa) of Stafford, VA; a nephew Paul, of Austin, TX; a niece, Suzel of Alexandria, VA; and three great-nephews and two great-nieces.
Mazie was born in Atlanta, GA in January, 1923. Her early life was shaped by the Depression and her small family moved often as her Dad looked for work until they settled in Macon, GA where Mazie graduated from high school and attended Mercer University. She had fulfilling careers with Procter & Gamble and later with US Air Force Contracting, Warner-Robbins, GA. While there she met and married Buck Burkett. After Buck retired from the Air Force, they settled in Anderson, SC and enjoyed over 25 years of happiness there and in Asheville at Deerfield.
Mazie was a life-long Christian who loved worshiping, serving and fellowshipping with her friends at New Hope Presbyterian Church in Asheville. She volunteered her time, talent and treasure to support many worthy causes. She enjoyed theater, music, bingo and bridge. Mazie made friends easily and had many, many close friends at Deerfield and in Anderson. She also enjoyed the social scene and parties at Deerfield, especially when she was still in Independent Living. Mazie loved – and wishes to thank – the staff at Deerfield, especially the Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing staffs who have been so kind to her these past four years.
A memorial service celebrating Mazie's life will be held in the St. Giles Healthcare Chapel (inside Deerfield facility) on Saturday May 23, 2015 at 2:00 PM.
Private interment will be next to her husband in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.
