He had served his country in the United States Army during WWII as a member of the 17th Airborne Division. He received the Purple Heart Medal for being wounded in action while landing in a glider during an assault in Europe. He was a member of a Veterans' of Foreign Wars chapter in Philadelphia and a member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.
