FLORENCE -- Shirley Patricia Pounders passed away on Monday, May 11, 2015, at ECM Hospital. Services will be held private for family.

Shirley Patricia Pounders was born in Sheffield, Alabama on Feb. 24, 1935. She was the daughter of Harold Townley Pounders and Shirley Costena Penney Pounders.

Shirley grew up in Florence, Alabama except for a few years she and her family spent in Washington D.C. She graduated from Coffee High School in 1953 and enrolled in Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans, Louisiana. She graduated in 1956 and remained with Charity Hospital as a nurse anesthetist. In 1961, Shirley returned to the Shoals and continued her career at ECM Hospital. She and her father bought a farm in Lauderdale County which gave her much joy. After the death of her father in 1963, Shirley gave her mother support and assisted in nurturing her ten and twelve year old brother and sister. She moved to Dallas, Texas in 1971 and married Paul Nelson White. They were married for 38 years. After Paul's death in 2010, she returned to Florence to be closer to her family.

She was a loving wife, sister, cousin, and friend. Shirley enjoyed organic gardening, reading, and cooking.

She is survived by her brothers, Townley Pounders, Granada, Nicaragua, and Donnie Pounders and wife, Wendy Wylie-Le Beau, Florence, Alabama; her sister, Peggy Megar and husband, James Roberts Megar, Florence, Alabama; cousins, "Best Cousin," Penney Long Roberts (Clyde), Florence, Alabama, John Pomfret Long (Mela), Lynchburg, Tennessee, and Mitzi Rebecca Long Cerjan (Martin), Jackson Heights, New York; nephews, Matthew Roberts Megar, Florence, Alabama, Harold (Trey) Townley Pounders (Lynne), Atlanta, Georgia, Ross Townley Pounders, Atlanta Georgia, and Roman Mobley Pounders, Charlotte, North Carolina; nieces, Katherine Ann Megar Wright (Johnny), Memphis, Tennessee, and Ella Grace Pounders, Atlanta Georgia; longtime friends, Inez and Edsel Holden, Florence, Alabama, and Frank and Debbie Jones, Waxahachie, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and aunt and uncle, Idalene Penney Long and John Pomfret Long.

Memorial donations may be given to the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library or preferred charity.
