Author and film-script writer. He was the husband of heiress and fashion designer Gloria Vanderbilt, and father of CNN news anchor Anderson Cooper and the late Carter Cooper. He grew up in New Orleans and moved to New York in his twenties to pursue acting. At age 26 he appeared on Broadway in the cast of 'The Strong Are Lonely.' He later moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a screenwriter writing the screenplay for the film 'The Chapman Reports' starring Shelley Winters and Jane Fonda and also appeared in a bit role in the 1961 film 'Sanctuary.'
