The older brother of Leland Stanford, Josiah was born in New York and came to California in 1849. In 1880 he owned and lived in the house on Lake Merritt built by William Walker Camron and his wife, Alice Marsh Camron. The house would later house the Oakland Public Museum, and later still be preserved as the historic Camron-Stanford House. Stanford’s father, the senior Josiah, had done considerable work on the first U.S. railroad near their Elk Grove, New York, farm, so the younger Stanfords, by virtue of helping their father, became familiar with railroad construction. In 1852 Leland came to Sacramento to join his brother in merchandising, a career he was following when he joined Huntington, Crocker, and Hopkins in building the transcontinental railroad. Three other Stanford brothers also came to California. Josiah became a vintner, and planted and managed the winery that came to be known as the Leland Stanford Winery in the Livermore Valley. It was later the Weibel Champagne Winery.
Josiah had married Elvira Griffin in 1843. Her death in 1852 may have prompted Josiah's move to California in that year.
