WALTER J. BRAUN
(1892 - 1960)

Walter J. Braun of 429 N. 10th St., a veteran automotive dealer, died at 4:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Hospital, where he had been a patient since Aug. 1. He was 68.

Mr. Braun had been president, treasurer and manager of Braun Motor Co., 1014 S. 10th St., since 1926 and had served the automotive industry at local, state and national levels for many years. He was born at Francis Creek March 10, 1892, son of the late Joseph and Anna Schweda Braun and attended parochial school in the village. A teacher for five years, Mr. Braun was graduated from Manitowoc County Teachers College and took extension work at Milwaukee Teachers College, now University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and Wisconsin State College at Oshkosh.

Mr. Braun became a dealer for Dodge automobiles and trucks in Manitowoc and Calumet Counties Dec. 1, 1926, and was cited by Chrysler Motors Corp., Dodge Division, for 30 years of service and received a similar citation from Socony Vacuum Oil. Co. He was a member of City Automotive Dealers Association of Manitowoc, a past director and member of Wisconsin Automobile Trades Assn., representing Door, Kewaunee and Manitowoc counties, 12 years; and a member of National Automobile Dealers Assn., representing it as area chairman for 14 years.

In April of 1944, Braun, chairman of the Labor Supply Committee of the Citizens Service Corp., was named executive director of the corps. The corps was a postwar arm of Civilian Defense, now Civil Defense. A veteran member of Manitowoc Kiwanis Club, he served the group as treasurer 18 years. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce.

Surviving him are two brothers, Charles J., of Detroit and Edwin, of Francis Creek and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church. The Rev. Donald Rose will officiate and burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Francis Creek.
