US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served the State of New York's 16th (1963 to 1973) and 17th Congressional Districts (1973 to 1981) in the United States House of Representatives. He served with the United States Army during World War II and upon his return home, he attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. He returned to active duty during the Korean War and was assigned platoon leader. Among the honors he received during his military service include the Distinguished Service Cross, Bronze Star with V and Oak Leaf Cluster. After his discharge, he worked for his family's trucking business. During his tenure in Congress, he was a supporter of the United States' involvement in Vietnam. Additionally, he supported the Johnson administration's efforts on Civil Rights and antipoverty legislation, as well as increased funding for education. During the 1970s, he took a more conservative approach towards issues, as he opposed both gay and abortion rights. Murphy, along with several other notable politicians was implicated in a sting operation by the FBI known as Abscam, in which he accepted bribe money.
