Photojournalist, Author. During her prolific, award winning career, she specialized in capturing raw human emotion and social issues on film. Raised in the Philadelphia suburb of Elkins Park, she found her interest in photography during her youth and initiated her lifelong passion with a Kodak Brownie. She earned her Bachelor's Degree in Art and Painting from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962 and received her Masters in Photojournalism, two years later. With the aid of a Fulbright Scholarship, she traveled to Turkey and later the Middle East. She came to prominence, with her photo essay in the publication Look Magazine on the subject of heroin addicts in London and expanded her talents as a motion picture still photographer for such films as "Carnal Knowledge" (1971) and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975). During the 1960s and early 1970s, she captured the nation in turmoil as it struggled with division over the Vietnam War. Her first book of works "Passport" was published in 1974 and in 1980, she traveled to India which resulted in her book "Falkland Road" which depicted prostitutes in Mumbai. After spending time with Mother Teresa in Calcutta, she produced a book about her experience. Her "Streetwise" series based in Seattle for Life Magazine brought to light the day to day living conditions of a teenage prostitute who went by the name of "Tiny". Her work on the homeless of Los Angeles again brought an often overlooked part of society to attention. Among the many honors she received include the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award and the George W. Polk Award for Photojournalism. She died of complications from a blood and bone marrow disorder. She was married to film director Martin Bell.
