Frederick “Fred” Jones, 80, of Newport, NH passed away after a long struggle with cancer May 23, 2015 in White River Jct., Vermont.

Fred is survived by his loving wife, Betty and three children; Scott Jones, South Denis, MA; Kevin Jones, Sunapee, NH and Charlene Betourney, Athens, GA and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He leaves 3 siblings; Frank Jones, Concord, NH; Marjorie Tellor and Ruthie Quimby, both residents of Newport, NH.

Fred is predeceased by his parents, Cyrus and Alma (Fisher) Jones; and his sisters; Lynnie Douliette, Marie Cummings and brother, Charlie Jones.

Fred was born “on the move” November 4, 1934 in Henniker, NH while in a taxi.

In Fred’s young teenage years, his spirit and ability to overcome adversity were tested when he and his six siblings were separated and moved to different children's homes and several foster homes throughout NH. Eager to escape, Fred enlisted in the US Army, serving during and after the Korean Conflict.

Returning state side he married his beloved wife Betty of fifty-seven years, who gave birth to their two sons in St. Cloud, Florida. Longing for NH, the new family returned to Newport and welcomed their first baby girl.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman. One of the most rewarding careers that Fred had was the police force, and often enjoyed telling stories from his earlier days as an officer.

Fred proudly served on both the Claremont Police and the Newport Police Departments for more than seventeen years, including special task force assignments at the NH Motor Speedway and Mount Sunapee patrol. During these same years he volunteered his service for the Newport Fire Department.

As a fifteen year member of the planning board, Fred helped to revitalize Newport’s downtown area and actively participated in community clubs such as the Newport Moose, American Legion, Foresters Club, and the Newport Senior Center.

Out of his motivation to help others, Fred volunteered driving services for patients needing rides to area hospital. For many years Fred never missed the opportunity to give poppies to raise money for veterans in need. He also enjoyed providing food deliveries for the senior center. He seemed to give out of instinct and not obligation. His kindness will be dearly missed by many.

Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Guild with Funeral Military Honors as conducted by the Brewster-Gould-Lee-Rollins Post #25.
