Son of William Thomas Goodwin and Eliz Anne Kidwell, they married on September 5, 1846 in Washington, DC.

In the 1870 Census he is living in Laurel, Maryland with his parents and siblings: James, Ann, Rosalie, Catherine, Agnes, Martha, and William. Along with Catherine and Susan Free. His father is a Blacksmith, James is an Apt Carpenter, Ann and Catherine are working in the Cotton Mills, along with the Free sisters. His brother James will go on to marry Catherine Free.

In the 1900 Census he is living in Washington, DC with his wife Catherine and children: Mary, Edward, Rosa, John, Vernon and Raymond. Along with her widowed mother in law Ellen Merriman. William is a Teamster. He has been married 13 years. Catherine has had 7 children, with 6 living at this time.

By the 1920 Census he is still in Washington, DC with Catherine and children: Vernon, Walter, Helen, Albert, Florence, Lawrence and Ruth. William is a Truck Farmer, Vernon is a Machine Operator.
