Melvin Cyrus Seglem, Jr. was the youngest son of six children born to Loulia M. Sheffield and Melvin Cyrus Seglem. He joined the United States Navy and served with the Amphibious Forces in WWII from 1941-1945. As a Gunners Mate 3rd Class, he was assigned to the USS Babbitt (AG-102) on May 9, 1945. During his service he was stationed in the South Pacific, North Pacific, Atlantic and Japan. He often talked about all his memories of the war with his children and was a very proud American and WWII veteran.
