Son of Alexander and Ann Potts Moreland. Commissioned an officer in Company G, Kentucky 1st Infantry Regiment on 01 June 1861. Mustered out on 14 May 1862 at Richmond, VA. (Source; Kentucky Volunteers War 1861-1865.
General John H Morgan's ( Morgan's Raiders) Cavalry Division, was Photographed on May 3, 1864 while imprisoned at Fort Delaware. The photo at the right was autographed by Moreland. After his release Lt. Moreland served under Morgan's brother-in-law in the 2nd Kentucky Cavalry. Lt. Moreland Later volunteered to act as President Jefferson Davis body guard, escorting the Rebel President through the Southern lines after the collapse of the Confederacy. Moreland would be recaptured in May 1865 at Washington, GA.
Civil WAR CSA , Joined Major Jack Tompson's regiment at the outbreak of war and later served as Captain on staff of John Morgan; served as deputy circuit clerk of Daviess County under Major Tompson for 10 or 12 years; later a bookkeeper for W.S. Stone distillery; Mother resided at the corner of Frederica & Fourth Streets; Lt. in the Dixie Guards, the first company to leave Daviess County for service in the Confederate Army on 28 May 1861
