Born Leo George Wheeler, he was an English actor, writer, and film director. Half-brother of film legend Charlie Chaplin.


His early work included seven years as principal comedian of the Charles Hewitt and A. Phillips Dramatic and Comedy Company, in which he toured the far East in a repertoire of 70 plays.


He began his film career after coming to America in 1918. He became a U.S. citizen in 1936. In 1938 he married Alice Chapple (AKA Alice May Chapple Dryden Judd), a prima ballerina with Radio City Music Hall. They had one son together, Spencer Dryden. They divorced in 1943. Wheeler remained active in the film industry until 1954.
