9th Turkey President. He served as Turkey's president from 1993 to 2000. His political carrier spanned nearly 50 years during which he also served seven times as the country's prime minister. His government was twice overthrown by the country's powerful military. He served as the prime minister five times between the years 1965 and 1993. He was the leader of the Justice Party (AP) from 1964 to 1980 and of the True Path Party (DYP) from 1987 to 1993. After the sudden death of Turkey's prime minister Turgut Özal in 1993, Demirel, who was leading the Democratic Path Party (DYP) in government, was elected president by the Parliament. He then asked Tansu Çiller to form a new government, thus giving Muslim but secular Turkey its first woman prime minister. Cause of death was a respiratory tract infection.
