Curate of the Church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary of Manhattan, New York, between 1927 and his death ten years later, Father Nazzareno Formosa was born in Gozo, Malta, on March 29, 1901. Ordained priest on August 2, 1921, in 1927 he emigrated to the United States to minister to the growing Maltese population in New York City. He became a naturalized American citizen and incardinated priest of the Archdiocese of New York.

Assigned to the church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary on East 33rd Street, for ten years he ministered thoroughly to the parishioners, especially the Maltese in Manhattan and Astoria. He was also chaplain to many associations formed within the Maltese community in New York. Father Nazzareno died in Columbus Hospital, New York City, on July 22, 1937 at the age of 36 as a result of appendicitis. His funeral took place at the church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary where around 800 people attended to bid him farewell.

Closed in January 2007, the church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary was eventually demolished, with a small chapel and a residence for the clergy but built instead. Cardinal Edward Egan, former Archbishop of New York, spent his last years at the said residence up to his death in 2015. He himself dedicated the chapel in May 2010.
