Pickensville Shanty
Becomes Funeral Pyre
For James Parkinson

James Parkinson, about 42, was burned to death last night when fire razed his one-room house in Pickensville, Waynesburg R.D. 3.

His brother, Lewis, who discovered the blaze, was painfully burned in an attempt to rescue the trapped man from the flames.

As far as firemen could tell last night, Parkinson was alone in the house when it burned. The alarm was turned in about 10:45. The small frame building was beyond saving when the Waynesburg Fire Company got to the scene. It was more than an hour and a half before firemen could begin to search for the remains.

Lewis Parkinson said that he first notied the flames as he was walking up a steep hill near the house. He was coming from the store. He ran the 500 yards or so to the building and kicked in the door.

He said he saw his brother lying on the floor, but was unable to get to him, due to a wall of flames. It looked as though James had tried to reach the door, Lewis said, before being overcome. Louis suffered burns of the hands and face. He was given emergency treatment by firemen at the scene.

The blaze, which lighted the sky south of Waynesburg and was clearly visible from town, attracted a large crowd. Its cause was undetermined. The small shanty was heated bya a coal stove.

In addition to his brother, Lewis, Parkinson is survived by his father, Harvey Parkinson of Ruff Creek; one other brother, Albert (Bud) Parkinson; and four sisters, Belle, wife of Grover Kiger of West Waynesburg; Fay, of Rices Landing; May, wife of Pete Mitchell, Wellsburg, W. Va., and Alice, wife of Ralph Knight of near Rogersville.
