HULL - Shirley Barber Spratlin, 98, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Quiet Oaks Health Care, Crawford.
She was born in the Sanford Community (formerly known as Sawdust), Madison County, Georgia on May 19, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Addie Moorehead Thornton Barber and Lamar Barber.

She was preceded in death in 1971 by her husband, Ben James Spratlin.

She was also preceded in death by half brothers and sisters who were 20 years older than she. They included Katie Barber Massey, George Barber, Talmadge Barber, Dupree Barber, Lillian Thornton Hood, Gertrude Thornton, Riden, Burt and Dupree Thornton. At the time of Shirley’s mother’s death, an infant daughter also passed, Shirley’s little sister.

Survivors include Shirley’s daughter, Dolores Spratlin Kuykendall of Austin, Texas; grandson, Kyle Kuykendall of Knoxville, Tenn., and his wife and daughter; Shirley’s daughter, Evelyn Spratlin Wood and husband, Roy Wood Jr. of Hull and granddaughter, Addie Wood Henderson and husband, Fain Henderson of Hull.

Shirley grew up in the Sanford Community and was a member of Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church. After she married James, she moved to the Hull community. She was very active at Hull Baptist Church where she taught the Adult Women’s Class for many years. She was a member of the Madison County Home Demonstration Club (won many awards at Rock Eagle for her sewing), Hull Baptist Church Golden Highlights, Gordon’s Chapel United Methodist Church Over Fifty, member of Athens Shrinenettes, Athens Happy Squares and Athens Classic City Squares.

Her working career, some of which, included Davison’s, downtown Athens and Brownstone’s, downtown Athens. She was a homemaker most of her life.

She was a great cook, loved working in her flowers, enjoyed camping at Lake Rabun and was very proud of her Native American Cherokee heritage.

Visitation will be held at Bernstein Funeral Home in Athens on Monday, June 8, from 7-9 p.m. Memorial services will be held at Hull Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 9, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Randy Crowe conducting the service.
