Janusz Francisek Gibes, Polish immigrant, son of Jozef (Joseph) Mathias Gibes and Salomeia (Ania) Budek/Dudek-Gibes.

John F. Gibes was born just north of Jadowniki Mokre, on the other side of the Wista (Vistula) River. In 1888 it was called the Kingdom of Poland, but was under the control of the Tsar of Russia. In 1894, John, at 6 years old, arrives in the U.S. with his family. (Gibes Family History)

John's father Jozef came to America in 1885, 1890, 1891 and part of 1893 up until he brought his family to America, searching for a place to settle so that his family was taken care of upon their arrival to the US..

On 12 Apr 1894, his parent's and 2 siblings boarded the SS America in Bremen. Spending 2 weeks at sea, the family arrived at the Port of Baltimore on 27 Apr 1894..

At this time John's mother was 8 months pregnant and they still had 800 miles to travel to get to Lark's Lake, Michigan in a wagon from Maryland to Pellston, Michigan..

On 30 May 1894, soon after they reached the Pellston, Round Lake area, Edmond Frank Gibes was born. He was the 1st child of Jozef Gibes to be born in America. Edmond is John's brother.

Jozef Gibes, father of John, cleared 60 acres of land by himself and built a frame house for his family. He bought and sold land,
urging his Polish roots in Chicago and beyond, to come to northern Michigan, thus a small Polish community settlement had begun.

Jozef Gibes, amongst other family members built the original Catholic Church in Lark's Lake, Michigan in 1905. In 1941 it was taken down and the new St Nicholas church was built just down the road..

A 100 yr old celebration was held at the St Nicholas Church on 10 July 2005..

John came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1909.

He was a chief marine engineer for the Pittsburgh Steamship Co., 1909-1926. He operated a used car business for 4 yrs in Wilwaukee then returned to the Great Lakes vessels in 1930. He retired in 1954 from the Hutchinson Steamship line.

On 22 Aug 1911, John married Anastasia 'Stella' Scislowski at St Hedwig's in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
