Hall of Fame Professional Football Player. For ten seasons (1968 to 1977), he played at the tight-end position in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions. Born Charles Alvin Sanders, he attended James B. Dudley High School in Greensboro, North Carolina and played both collegiate football and basketball at the University of Minnesota. Selected by the Lions during the 3rd round of the 1968 NFL Draft, he totaled 128 career regular season games. During the course of his career, he achieved Pro-Bowl honors seven-times and earned First-Team All-Pro Status three-times. After retiring as a player, he worked as a radio analyst for Lions' broadcasts and served as an assistant coach with the Lions. He was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007. At the time of his death, he was assistant director of player personnel. Sanders died following a battle with cancer.
