Author. He will be best remembered for his penning of the juvenility-themed novel "The Car Thief" (1972). His father was an alcoholic, his mother abandoned the family when he was one year old, he was cared for by a foster mother, Theodore dropped out of high school and became a troubled teenager, prior to joining the United States Army (he was stationed in Germany) at the age of seventeen. During this time, he completed his high school studies and following his discharge, he enrolled at Michigan State University. When he decided to focus on a writing career, he enrolled at the University of Iowa's Writers Workshop from where he attained his Master of Fine Arts. He went on to teach at the University of New Hampshire followed by Emerson College. Among his other books include "A German Affair" (1976), "The True Detective" (1987) and "Winning the City" (1990). He died of complications from congestive heart failure.
