Helen Marie Wilson King
Birth: Oct. 21, 1925
Clarke County
Georgia, USA
Death: Jul. 9, 2006
Orlando
Orange County
Florida, USA

My mom, Helen, was born and raised in Athens, Georgia. She was the daughter of Delpha Fletcher Wilson and Irene Davis Wilson. Her mom passed away when she was 12 years old and she was taken care of by her Grandmother Annie and her Daddy, my Papa. She graduated from Athens High School in 1942.

Mom was on a date with another young man when she saw my dad, Joseph, and said she knew at that moment she was going to marry him. On June 28, 1946, they were married in Athens, Georgia. Bonnie and Beverly were born of this marriage, and a son, Joseph O. King, Jr., was from a previous marriage of Dad's. There are 7 granchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Another grandson, Stephen Joseph, preceded her in death.

Mom was a homemaker, and held a few jobs outside the home, including being a looper for Hanes Hosiery Mill. But, her life was her family and she enjoyed crafts, bowling, and working in her yard until her health failed. She sewed clothes for us and for our dolls, and made doll clothes and trinkets for all the grandkids. She made us all afghans, Christmas ornaments of every shape, form and fashion, and literally tons of items made out of plastic canvas until the arthritis in her hands got the best of her. Mom loved country music and Southern Gospel. I remember how she loved to dance. When my Dad was traveling a lot before he retired, she and I would crank up the stereo and dance in the den and sing along at the top of our lungs. When I was little, I remember her and dad having parties in our basement and I always loved hearing "Smoke gets in your eyes" by the Platters wafting up the stairs. She liked anything to do with angels and her favorite color was yellow. She was of the Baptist faith and read her Bible often.

Mom was hardworking and taught us that you worked hard for what you had. She was loyal to her friends and loving to her family. She was married to my Dad for 59 1/2 years before he passed away. Mom had made many friends on Find A Grave, and found great comfort and companionship here. I am so grateful for that.

Mom passed away peacefully, in her bed, holding the hands of her two girls, on July 9, 2006. Words cannot express how much she is missed.

In Memory...

We do not need a special day,
to bring you to our minds.
The days we do not think of you,
are very hard to find.

Our hearts still ache with sadness,
and secret tears still flow.
What it meant to lose you,
noone will ever know.

There will always be a heartache,
and often a silent tear.
But always a precious memory,
of the days when you were here.

We love you, Mom!

Mom, so many images come to mind,
whenever I speak your name.
It seems without you in my life,
things just will not seem the same.
What happened to those lazy days,
when I was just a child...
when my life was consumed by you,
in your love and in your smile.
What happened to all those times,
when I always looked to you...
no matter what happened in my life,
you could make the gray skies blue.
Mom, some days I hear your voice
and turn to see your face,
yet in my turning it seems,
the sound has been erased.
Mom, who will I turn to for answers,
when life does not make sense...
who will be there to hold me close,
when the pieces just don't fit.
Oh Mom, if I could turn back time,
and once more hear your voice,
I'd tell you that out of all the Moms,
you still would be my choice.
Please always know I love you,
and noone can take your place...
years may come and go,
but your memory will never be erased.
Today, Jesus, as you are listening,
in your home above,
would you go and find my Mom...
and give her all my love!
