He grew up at the family farm. Dale graduated from Albion High School in 1942. He met his wife Beryl (Lynnette) Godfrey Fobes as a senior in high school, and they had been together ever since (married March 30, 1945). Dale joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in January 1943, served on an air-sea rescue boat in the Pacific Ocean during World War II, and achieved the rank of Warrant Officer JG. After the war, Dale and Lynnette returned to Albion and started a family and their own dairy farm and later opened his own welding business. He and Lynnette also owned and operated the "Corner Store." Dale had a passion for antique tractors, farming and storytelling and was a member of Albion Post 567 of the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gordon Fobes of Albion; a son, Roger Fobes of Albion; three brothers, Leslie Fobes, R. Wayne Fobes and Russell Fobes; and a sister, Louellen Rindo.
He is survived by his wife, Lynnette; a sister, Phyllis Goldhart (Leonard) of Albion; a son, Gary Fobes (Laurie) of Albion; a son, Ron Fobes of Albion; a daughter-in-law, Merlene Fobes of Albion; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Fobes-Jacoby of New Jersey; four granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.
