Elizabeth Ward came to the United States from England in 1854, traveling by ship with her sister and brother-in-law, the Whitehouses. They were brought to America by the Mormons as recent converts. The Mormons increased their numbers in the United States by going to England in 1839 to recruit new members.

The ship, Windermere, arrived in New Orleans from Liverpool, England on 23 Apr 1854. Windermere passenger records list Elizabeth Ward (28) from Watford Locks, England as traveling with her sister, Rebecca Ward Whitehouse (30), Rebecca’s husband, Jacob Whitehouse (32), a shoemaker, and their sons Isaac (8) and Joseph (3). Elizabeth's sister and brother-in-law died from cholera shortly after reaching the United States. Their orphaned sons, Isaac Whitehouse, Joseph Whitehouse and an infant - born during the voyage - were left in the care of their aunt, Elizabeth Ward.

Samuel George Baker, his wife, Sarah and young son, Edwin George, also Mormon converts, came to the United States from England in 1854 on the Windermere. Samuel Baker (24), address 56 Tifforia St., Birmingham, England is listed as a passenger along with his wife, Sarah (28) and son, Edwin G (3). He states his occupation as pearl worker. They traveled in steerage and were funded by the Perpetual Emigration Fund. The fund financially assisted members of the Mormon church to emigrate from Europe to Utah.

After disembarking in New Orleans, the Baker family most likely traveled on one of the steamboats - Sonora or Grand River - up the Mississippi River to St. Louis, Missouri. Sarah Baker gave birth to Franklin Edward Baker on 4 May 1854.

Upon their arrival in St Louis, Missouri, cholera struck many people, including Sarah. Sarah’s weakened state, having recently given birth and endured the long sea voyage and trip by steamboat, most likely contributed to her succumbing to the disease, leaving Samuel to care for his two young sons alone.

Elizabeth Ward and her three nephews were traveling in the same wagon train (from Missouri to Utah) as Samuel and his sons. Samuel George Baker married Elizabeth Ward, thus combining their families. Before reaching Salt Lake City, the Whitehouse infant died. Isaac Whitehouse (10) died on October 27, 1855 and is buried in Parowan, Utah.

Samuel and Elizabeth's first child, John Samuel, was born in Utah in Dec 1855. Their second child, Joseph Ward Baker, was born in California in Oct 1857. Franklin Baker and Joseph Whitehouse (Find A Grave Memorial #21672517) were left in Salt Lake while Samuel and Elizabeth and Samuel's son, Edwin, (and infant John Samuel) traveled onto San Bernardino with the Mormons. It is not known exactly when, but both Frank Baker and Joe Whitehouse rejoined Samuel and Elizabeth in San Bernardino at some point. The family eventually settled in the Santa Fe Springs area. Samuel and Elizabeth had six children together: John, Joseph, Harriet, Mary, Sarah, and Elizabeth Baker.
