QUINCY, Pa. - Robert C. Putnam, 82, of Quincy Village, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003, at Quincy United Methodist Home.

Born Nov. 9, 1920, in Sheboygan, Wis., he was the son of the late Raymond and Elda Liebner Putnam.

He was a 1938 graduate of Central High School in Sheboygan. In 1950, he received his bachelor of science degree in economics from Siena College near Albany, N.Y.

He worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in field offices in Albany, Kansas City, Kan., Baltimore and Washington, D.C., where he became supervisor of the Communist-Hate Group Squad and chief of Communist-Subversive Activities Groups section. He retired in 1972 after 31 years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific Theater, where he completed his naval aviation training and flew torpedo planes.

He attended Central Baptist Chapel in Mont Alto, Pa.

He was a member of Kiwanis International, Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI and Risinger-Stotler VFW Post 4019 of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Edna Hack Putnam; one daughter, Nancy P. Vermillion of New Market, Md.; one son, Steven R. Putnam of Gaithersburg, Md.; one sister, Betty Kroos of Bradenton, Fla.; three grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Pastor Ronald Skidmore will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

There will be no public viewing; the family will receive friends Monday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family requests the omission of flowers.
