Burnet was from Trenton, NJ and graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1775. He served as secretary of the Essex County Committe of Safety in 1776 and was aide-de-camp to General Nathanael Greene from January 1778 until the end of the war. His father, William, served as a Continental Congressman in 1780.


CHARLES-TOWN. (South-Carolina) October 18.
Died at the Havanna after a few days illness, Major Ichabod Burnet, Aid de Camp to the honourable Major General Greene.---He was buried with great solemnity in the sea; and a British frigate being in the harbour, the Captain manned his boat, and joined in the mournful procession. As the scholar, citizen and soldier, Major Burnet was equalled by few; his loss will be long and deeply impressed on the hearts of those who served with him in the field.
