Pulitzer Prize Winning Poet. He was the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry (1992) for his "Selected Poems" work. After attaining his Master of Fine Arts from Kansas State College, he studied at the Iowa Writers' Workshop. In 1967 while a graduate student, he penned his first notable collection titled "The Lost Pilot", which was about his father who died during World War II. Tate had a lengthy teaching career at such institutions as the University of California at Berkeley, Columbia University and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. During the course of his writing career, he penned roughly two-dozen poetry collections.
