Syl graduated from Coleman High School in 1934, Marinette Teachers College in 1936 and UW-Oshkosh in 1960. Syl is credited with 34 years of teaching service by the State of Wisconsin. Syl started teaching in a "one-room" grade school in the Coleman area, while he operated the family dairy farm in the Town of Pound.
In 1951 the family moved to the Town of Beaver where he taught school and operated a 20-milk cow dairy farm.
In 1957, he began teaching at Crivitz, and taught there until he retired from teaching in 1980. At Crivitz Grade School, Syl coached basketball and took his classes on over-night trips to the Camp Bird Environmental Center.
Syl enjoyed meeting people, especially former students, and hearing about their lives. After retiring from teaching, Syl continued to raise cash crops until he was 91 years old.
He enjoyed riding his Allis-Chalmers tractor and watching the crops grow. Syl enjoyed music, playing his violin or piano to entertain others.
He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Coleman, where he had served as Sunday school principal for several years.
Syl married Edna Henquinet on June 19, 1943, which was the first marriage ceremony held in the new church building.
Sylvester is survived by one son, Lee (Carol) of DePere, WI;
two grandchildren: Wendy (Bill Pokorsky) of Grafton and Brian (Molly) of Green Bay;
and two great grandchildren: Elaina and Lyla Pokorsky.
He is also survived by one sister-in-law, Hazel Meyers and by many special nieces and nephews.
Edna preceded him in death in 1956.
Syl was preceded in death by nine sisters and brothers: William (Emma), Lena (Walter) Schahczenski, Henry (Ella), Gertrude (Elmer) Koepsel, Joe (Seriena), Anna (John) Ellie, Louie, Math (Eunice), and Marcella (Orrin) Voigt. He was preceded in death by sister- and brother-in-laws: Grace (John) Lerich, Myrtle (Elmer) Mathis, Ruth (Paul) Boerchinger, and Delbert (Lorna) Henquinet.
Visitation and Funeral Services will be Thursday, April 29, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 221 North Louis Ave, Coleman, Wis. Visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of Service at 11 a.m. Burial in the Beaver Town Cemetery next to his farm.
