Charlie Petsch was a member of the Otters Swimming Club and was a top swimmer. At the SA Swimming Champs held in Durban in 1912, he came 2nd in the 500 yards freestyle, behind the legendary "Looper" Godfrey. His name is on the Queens Park Swimming Club WWI Roll of Honour. The plaque was originally in the Town Baths in West Street but was moved at a later stage to the Municipal Swimming Bath in Durban North.
He died of malaria contracted in German East Africa.
