Russian Olympic Gold Medalist, Hall of Fame Swimmer. She made history by becoming the first Soviet swimmer to win a gold medal, when she accomplished this feat during the Women's 200 Meter Breaststroke at the 1964 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. In addition, she earned two silver and two bronze medals, one each at the 1968 Summer Games and 1972 Summer Games. She distinguished herself by setting five world records during the course of her career. She earned a degree in Journalism from Moscow State University in 1966 and later returned to the sport as a swimming coach. She was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1977.
