Dead at 73

Retired Business Man
Succumbs Here

Fred Metz, 73, native of Omaha and for many years in the brewery and real estate business here, died of heart trouble early Sunday morning at his home, 115 North Fifty-third street, after an illness of more than a year.

Mr. Metz was the son of Fred Metz, sr., who with a brother Philip founded the Metz brewery here, in 1864. The younger Fred Metz and his brothers engaged in the brewing business until the advent of prohibition, and then Fred Metz retired.

Was King of Ak-Sar-Ben.

He was one of the founders of Ak-Sar-Ben, and its ninth king. He was an organizer also of the Sons of Omaha, having served as its president. He had been a member of the Country, Field and Athletic clubs, and was a former officer of the Omaha club. Years ago he was active in democratic politics, though he never sought political office.

He is survived by his widow, Harriet; a son, Charles E. Metz of Omaha; a daughter, Mrs. Jesse L. Livermore of New York City; two brothers, Charles and Arthur Metz of Omaha; a sister, Mrs. E. F. Hauck of St. Louis; and a half-brother, Herman Metz of St. Louis.

Mr. and Mrs. Livermore, advised by telephone Saturday night of Mr. Metz' sudden turn for the worse, arrived by plane about 6:30 a. m. Sunday, shortly after his death.

Funeral Tuesday.

The body will lie in state at the Burket mortuary until the funeral Tuesday at 2 p. m., at the residence, Dr. Frederick W. Clayton of All Saints Episcopal church officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial park.

Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Barker, George Brandeis, Frank Drexel, Glen Wharton, Albert Cahn, Robert Rosenzweig, Fred Pearce, Sidney W. Smith, Dr. Adolph Sachs, Dr. Claude Uren, Joseph H. Friedel, E. P. Peck, John Brady, W. B. Millard, jr., Joseph Glesedieck of St. Louis, Gould Dietz, S. F. Miller of Chicago, Earl Morgan of Oshkosh, Wis., City Commissioner Joseph Hummel, Dr. Herbert H. Davis and Nelson B. Updike.

King Ak-Sar-Ben IX: Fred Metz

Fred Metz was the son of Fred Metz, Sr., who, with his brother Philip, founded the Metz Brewing Company. Mr. Metz engaged in the brewing business until the advent of prohibition when he retired. A native Omahan he was born on April 1, 1863. He was educated in Omaha and was an organizer of the Sons of Omaha serving as its President. Although he never sought public office, he was active in Democratic politics. He was a member of the Field Club, the Omaha Country Club, the Athletic Club and was an Officer of the Omaha Club. He died in Omaha on February 7, 1937, at the age of seventy-three.

Mr. Metz was an active member of the Board of Governors of the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben from 1898 to 1904 contributing much of his time and money for the advancement of the purposes of Ak-Sar-Ben. He was crowned the ninth King of Ak-Sar-Ben in 1903. His Royal Consort was Bess Brady, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Brady, who became Mrs. Thomas L. Davis.
