Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he became adjutant of the 33rd Illinois Infantry under General Charles E. Hovey. When the 48th United States Colored Infantry unit was established from the 10th Louisiana Infantry in March of 1864, he became its colonel. He led his unit in the assault and capture of Fort Blakely, Alabama in early April of 1865. At the end of the Civil War, he was named Brevet Brigadier General "for gallant and meritorious services."
