Emir of Mecca, King of Hejaz. Hussein was the emir of Mecca from 1908 to 1916 and king of Hejaz from 1916 to 1924. He was born into the line of Hashimites that served as Emir of Mecca starting in the early 19th century. Hussein became emir in 1908 and during the first World War, was a leader in the revolt against the Ottoman Empire. In October 1916 he proclaimed himself "king of the Arab countries", but the Allies only recognized him as King of Hejaz. After the war, his son Faisal represented him at the Versailles Peace Conference, but due to the "mandatory regimes" imposed on Syria, Palestine, and Iraq by Britain and France, he refused to agree to the peace treaty. He soon made enemies with Ibn Saud, another Arab leader, afterward and in 1924, war began. On October 5, 1924 he abdicated. Hussein went to Cyprus where he stayed until 1930. His sons Abdullah and Faisal would become kings of Transjordan (later Jordan) and Iraq respectively.
