Professional Football Player. Hawkins played linebacker for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings from 1961 to 1965. He was the second round draft choice for the Vikings in the 1961 draft out of the University of North Carolina. During his years with the Vikings, he was the first recipient of the Terry Dillon Award, served as defensive team captain, was selected to the 1963 Pro Bowl, and set the team record for the most tackles in a single game. After his football career, Hawkins served in local government in both Georgia and Wyoming and coached high football. Later in life, he suffered from Lewy-Body Dementia.
