Roman Catholic Saint. The son of a poor farmer from Laconi, Sardegna, a serious illness that struck young Vincenzo Peis when seventeen years of age made him vow that if should he recover his health he would enter the Order of Friars Minor Capuchins. Once healed, he did not however seek to pursue his vow, but in 1721, after being almost killed after loosing control of his horse, convinced that God had saved his life anew, made up his mind to follow his vocation at once. With his parents this time not raising objections towards his vocation as they did at first, he sought admission at the Capuchin friary of Cagliari, yet the superiors were hesitant to accept him due to his delicate health. Seeking the assistance of an influential friend of his, he was at last received into the novitiate, during which period, despite his physical infirmities, was able to follow all the spiritual exercises of the community and outstand himself in living the observance of the Rule of Saint Francis to its perfection. Working in the weaving shed for the first fifteen years of his religious life, for forty years he was then a questuant of alms, seeking contributions for the friaries house to house. Despite his infirmities, he persevered his duties until he was eighty years of age and even after loosing his eyesight, kept on going with his daily rounds for two years. With the veneration of the people increasing towards his figure, many sick people attributed miraculous healings to him. Passing away in Cagliari on May 11, 1781, many miracles are said to have occurred at his grave. Pope Pius XII beatified him on June 16, 1940 and later had him canonized on October 21, 1951. Patron saint of Oristano, his liturgical feast day is held on May 11.
