A lifelong resident of San Antonio, on June 4, 1950 she married Sgt. Daniel Hall Mercer and became part of the important military mission to rebuild England and liberated France after WW II and years of Nazi bombing and occupation. She spent twenty-three of her fifty-two years of marriage as a devoted Air Force wife and mother of three children.
When her husband retired from the Air Force, she became a beloved Sunday school teacher and Church nursery supervisor at Laurel Heights United Methodist in San Antonio. And for fifteen years she was an outstanding head pastry chef where each day she blessed the students and educators at Thomas Edison High School. Mary Mercer's home was a place where you always "took an extra plate home" and could be assured of a hug, a cup of hot coffee and delicious homemade goodies. She touched so many lives with her honest love, selfless Christian action, forgiveness and compassion. Mary Mercer was the "poster child" of what you would want for a godly Mom, Grandma, Sister, Aunt, Wife and dear Friend. If there is a PhD in Christian Love – Mary Mercer would be an honors graduate!
She is preceded by her husband Dan Mercer and her parents Arturo and Ester Almaguer, and eight beloved siblings.
Mary Mercer is survived by her loving brother Hector (Diane) Almaguer; children Kenneth (Rosalia) Mercer, Patricia (Phillip) Dapeer, and Sharon (Bobby) Barnes; grandchildren Mary Alice Valenzuela, Sarah Mercer, Rebekah Mercer, and Hannah Barnes; great grandchildren Matthew Martinez and Marlynn Valenzuela; and countless cherished nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Dr. David A. Gutierrez of the Spanish Christian Church will preside over the services.
The family would like to personally thank Nurse Marissa, Chaplain Albert, Social Worker Art and many others of Gentiva Hospice for their care and service, and of course our sister, Patricia for her daily love and care.
SERVICES:
Visitation and a Celebration of her life will be Thursday, August 6, 2015 from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. followed with a Funeral Service, Friday morning, August 7 at 9:00 A.M. at Mission Park Funeral Chapels North. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
