Statesman. A native of Gabtoli, Bogra, Bangladesh, he was a high-ranking military leader and politician who became best known for his fight for Indepedence for his country. He served in several different political offices but he made more of impact as the Chief of the Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army, and as the President of Bangladesh from 1977 to 1981. Rahman was also responsible for starting the Bangladesh Nationalist Party or the BNP on September 1, 1978. On May 30, 1981, he was assassinated in Chittagong, Bangladesh, by a small army. The airport in Dhaka, Bangladesh, was renamed the Zia International Airport in his honor. His widow Khaleda Zia later served as the Vice President of Bangladesh for two terms. His grave at the Chandrima Uddan or "Moonlight Park" in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is a well known tourist attraction as well as a public park.
