Hall of Fame Professional Football Player and Sports Broadcaster. He was a New York Giants star who successfully transitioned to a long career as a sportscaster on television and radio. He attended the University of Southern California on a football scholarship and went pro after being selected 11th overall in the first round of the 1952 draft and played with the New York Giants his entire NFL career until 1964, with several visits to the Pro Bowl. During his 12 seasons with the New York Giants, he had 3,609 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns in 840 carries, he also had 367 receptions for 5,434 yards and 43 touchdowns. Gifford completed 29 of the 63 passes he threw for 823 yards and 14 touchdowns with 6 interceptions. The 6 interceptions are tied with Walter Payton for most interceptions thrown by a non-quarterback in NFL history, while the 14 thrown touchdowns are also the most among any non-quarterback in NFL history. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977. When his playing career ended, he became a sports commentator, first for CBS and then as a co-host of Monday Night Football from 1971 to 1985 alongside Howard Cosell and Don Meredith. He was on the microphone during a football game when CBS announced the death of John Lennon on December 8, 1980. Gifford was married to American television presenter Kathie Lee Gifford. He died of natural causes at age 84 in 2015.
