United States Navy Admiral. He served as the Commander of the Naval Air Force, United States Atlantic Fleet from 1978 until 1981. He served as United States Representative to the NATO Military Committee from 1981 until 1982. A four-star Admiral, he flew more than 100 missions during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His father was a disabled veteran from the First World War, George was raised in Florida and left high school at the age of seventeen to enlist with the Navy during World War II. He later received two degrees from Stanford University (which included a PhD in Engineering Management) and two degrees from George Washington University. Among the many honors he received include 2 Air Medals (Korea), 1 Navy Commendation Medal with Combat "Valor" Device (Korea), a Legion of Merit with Combat "Valor" Device from Vietnam, 4 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 12 Air Medals (Vietnam) and 3 Navy Commendation Medals with Combat "Valor" Device (Vietnam). He retired in 1982 after thirty-five years of military service. His autobiography (written by James Carter) "Call Me 'Gus': The Story of Admiral George E.R. Kinnear, II, USN (Retired) was published in 2014.
