Janet L. Zarko, 70, of 300 W. Fifth St., passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at her residence after a one-year battle with cancer.
She was born April 11, 1945, in Ashland, a daughter of the late John A. and Sarah (Schell) Whyne.
She attended grade school in Centralia, Aristes and Ashland, and received her GED in 1997.
On May 23, 1964, in St. Joseph Church, Mount Carmel, she married the late Paul J. "Eggie" Zarko Jr., who preceded her in death Jan. 12, 2003.
Janet was a military wife and homemaker and was stationed at various places, including Cape May, N.J., New London, Conn., San Juan Puerto Rico, Curtis Bay, Md., and Milwaukee, Wis., until her husband's retirement in October 1980, when they moved to Marion Heights. In 1983, she moved with her family to Mount Carmel where she resided until her death.
In her early years, she was employed at Bernko and later went to work at Lady Jane Manufacturing. Over the past few years, she worked with Keystone Services as a caregiver for individuals with mental illness.
Janet enjoyed spending her free time with her grandchildren and her dogs, Gizmo and Sandy.
Survivors include three children, Paula (Zarko) Amarose, of Mount Carmel, Scott Zarko, of Locustdale, and Paul J. Zarko III, of Mount Carmel; six grandchildren, Jessica, Rachel, Brandon, Morgan, Bethany and Bernard; a great-granddaughter, Gracie; a brother, Freeman "Butch" Whyne, of Sunbury; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.
Burial was at the convenience of the family. The C.J. Lucas Funeral Home Inc., 27 N. Vine St., Mount Carmel, C.J. Lucas IV, supervisor, handled the arrangements. To send condolences to the family, go to www.cjlucasfuneralhome.com.
