Roman Catholic Cardinal. Gazzaniga born Giorgio Gusmini entered seminary in Bergamo at an early age, later furthering his studies in Rome at the Pontifical Roman Athenaeum S. Apollinare, earning a doctorate in theology. Ordained priest in 1878, he lectured letters and philosophy at the said Seminary of Bergamo. Transferred to the Collegio Vescovile S. Alessandro in 1890 where he kept teaching the same subjects along with history, he went on to co-found the Società Cattolica Universitaria, which would later become known at the Italian Catholic Federation of University Students (FUCI). Named archpriest and vicar forane of Clusone in 1902, he was elected bishop of the diocese of Foligno by Pope Pius X on April 15, 1910, receiving his episcopal consecration from Bishop Giacomo Radini-Tedeschi in Bergamo on the following May 17. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Bologna by Pope Benedict XV, vacated following the latter's election to the Papacy, the said Pontiff created him cardinal priest with the title of Santa Susanna in his first consistory on December 6, 1915. A lengthy illness brought his end five years later in his episcopal city.
