Roman Catholic Cardinal. Castelletto Monferrato born Giovanni Vincenzo Bonzano entered seminary in Vigevano before joining the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions, furthering his studies in Rome at the Mastai College for Chinese Missions and the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum De Propaganda Fide. Ordained priest by there Cardinal Lucido Maria Parocchi on May 21, 1890, he rendered ministry in China between the following year and 1897 when on August 26 of the latter he was named vicar general of the diocese of Vigevano and the year that followed, chancellor. Named faculty member of the Pontifical Urbanian Athenaeum De Propaganda Fide that same year, in 1904 he was appointed its rector. Pope Pius X appointed him appointed him apostolic delegate in the United States of America on February 2, 1912, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular archbishopric see of Melitene from Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val on the following March 3. Put in charge temporarily of the apostolic delegation in Mexico on June 22, 1915, in the consistory of December 11, 1922, Pope Pius XI elevated him to the Sacred College of Cardinals with the title of San Pancrazio. Opting for the title of Santa Susanna on December 18, 1924, he presided over the initial renovation of the Basilica of Our Lady of Angels Assisi on April 19, 1925 and acted as Papal legate to the 28th International Eucharistic Congress held in Chicago on May 18, 1926. The Cardinal succumbed to complications aroused following an operation he underwent in Rome and was laid to rest in one of the latter's comune towns on the lower slopes of the Alban Hills.
