EAST HOLDEN – Retired Staff Sgt. John H. Smith passed away quietly May 17, 2011, with his loving family by his side. He was born Dec. 20, 1932, in Westerly, R.I., son of George and Emma (Burgess) Smith.

He lived in Maine for 25 years with his loving partner, Emily Benson. He was the love of her life and her best friend.

He is survived by Emily’s children, Chester Benson and his wife, Linda, of Bucksport, and Emily Ann Witham and husband, Jeffrey, of Bucksport and Florida; Emily’s grandchildren, Rebecca French, Melissa Tweedie and husband, Marcus, Meagan Benson, Nicole, and Charlie Ann; and great-grandchildren, Laycee and Austin Tweedie, all of Bucksport. A special thank you goes to Chester and Linda Benson who were always there for John, and to Emily Ann and Jeff Witham who loved him very much. The family also thanks Dr. Vincent Michaud for his wonderful care, and all the nurses at Eastern Maine Medical Center and the veteran’s hospital.

Graveside services will be held May 21 at Oak Grove Cemetery, Ashaway, R.I. Arrangements are under the direction of Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport.

NOTE: During our Air Force careers, I was stationed with then SSgt John H. Smith in the 1960s at Andrews AFB, MD. We were assigned to the unique organization that secured AF One and other dignitary aircraft. His obit has one error..., he retired with the rank of Technical Sergeant.
