William was in the Civil War for two or three years, in place of Mr. Brown who deeded him some land. In 1875, William purchased and farmed a plantation, part of Clover Bottom on the Bluestone River, Mercer Co., WV. It was the old Mitshell Clay place on the exact spot on which Tabitha clay was killed by the Indians. Her grave is there. In 1883, he moved his family to Hinton, WV, and operated a hotel.
