Mrs. Sears, nee Thankful Irish, was the widow of David Sears. Born to David Irish and the former Mercy Sweet of nearby Fleming, Thankful's name may seem unusual to modern passers-by. During the colonial and the early American eras, however, parents often gave their daughters the names of Christian virtues deemed especially desirable in women. Mrs. Sears died at the age of 69, eight years to the month after her husband, and is buried beside him.
