Herschel Austin House was appointed to the US Naval Academy in 1926, from Indiana, and graduated with the class of 1930. That class was one whose first decade of experience was essential for the enormous job that the US Navy was faced with, in WWII.

Some time in the mid 1930s, Herschel met the beautiful actress, Anita Page. Anita had shot to stardom with the release of the silent "flapper" film "Our Dancing Daughters", with co-stars Joan Crawford and Dorothy Sebastian. This was followed by many other very successful films, including both silents and early talkies. Anita and Herschel were married in 1937 and were together for 54 years, until Herschel's death at the age of 84. They had two daughters, Sandra and Linda.

Herschel retired from the Navy as a Rear Admiral. He and Anita continued to live in southern California for the remainder of their lives.
