Roman Catholic Cardinal. Gwożdżcu in Galizia born Jan Maurycy Paweł Puzyna de Kosielsko earned a doctorate in law from the University of Lviv on June 24, 1870 and entering seminary in Przemyśl in 1876, he was ordained priest on December 8, 1878 by the local ordinary, Msgr. Maciej Hirschler, after having served as procurator, magistrate and commissioner of Skarbu. Named vicar of Przeworsk, vice-rector of the seminary of Przemyśl and canon of its cathedral chapter in 1880, he was appointed auxiliary of Leopolis of the Latins on February 26, 1886, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Memphis on the following March 25 from Cardinal Mieczyslaw Halka Ledóchowski in Rome. Transferred to the see of Kraków with the title of Prince Bishop on January 22, 1895, Puzyna was created cardinal priest in the consistory of April 15, 1901 by Pope Leo XIII with the title of Ss. Vitale, Gervasio e Protasio. Participating in the conclave of 1903, during the morning session of Sunday, August 2, following the distribution of the ballot papers, the Cardinal rose and asking permission to speak from the Dean of the Sacred College, Cardinal Luigi Oreglia di Santo Stefano, pronounced a veto against Cardinal Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro in the name of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary. The declaration stated: "I have the honour, having been given this charge by the highest authority, to humbly ask Your Eminence, as Dean of the Sacred College of the Most Eminent Cardinals and Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, to receive the formal communication and to deign to transmit to and to officially notify the Sacred College in then name and by authority of His Apostolic Majesty, Franz Josef, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. His Majesty, intending to avail himself of an ancient right and privilege, pronounces the exclusionary veto against My Most Eminent Lord Cardinal Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro". As Msgr. Pietro Gasparri, future Cardinal Secretary of State observed, the first phrase of Puzyna's Latin declaration "Honoro mihi duco" ("I have the honour..."), should have more appropriately started with "Doleo", or else, "I regret...". This sad event in the history of Papal elections, saw the candidate eventually elected to the throne of Saint Peter, Cardinal Giuseppe Sarto, Patriarch of Venice as Pope Pius X, abolishing the civil veto and furthermore imposing the penalty of excommunication upon anyone that would dare to introduce a veto or otherwise interfere in the election of the Roman Pontiff. Pius X further decreed that all cardinals should take an oath upon the beginning of the conclave, promising not to aid any civil power in an attempt to influence the election of the Pope. Decorated with the grand cross of the Austrian Order of Sankt Stefan in 1904, Puzyna founded the Diocesan Museum of the Archdiocese of Kraków in 1907. Passing away on September 8, 1911, he was interred inside the city's Wawel's cathedral.
