Howard was the son of John Henry Tierney and Harriet Ella Fox. He married Belle Taylor in New York and had three children: Howard S., Jr., Gene Eliza, and Patricia. Howard and Belle were divorced by November 1942 and at the time of his death Howard was married to Helen Byram Tierney, Newtown. Pa. Howard and Helen had four children.
Howard and Belle's son, Howard S. Tierney, Jr., died April 16, 1990, in Martin County, Florida; their daughter Gene Tierney Lee died in 1991 in Houston, Harris County, Texas; and their daughter Patricia T. Reed Byrne died July 3, 2014, in Del Ray Beach,Florida.
Howard's ashes and those of his wife Helen were scattered on Mt Rainier in Washington state by their daughter.
