Veteran Attorney John H. Clark Dies
John Henry Clark, 88 a veteran Marion lawyer, churchman, politician and civic leader, died at 8:00 a.m. today at Marion General Hospital after an illness of two and one-half months.
Born in a one-room log cabin in Bowling Green Township May 19, 1872, he was the son of Nathan and Victoria Johnson Clark, both born in Marion County.
AFTER TEACHING seven winters during school sessions and doing chores at night, he accumulated the money to enter Ohio Northern University school of law and completed a three-years course in 39 weeks.
For 40 years he served as treasurer of the Epworth Methodist Church and member of the official board and for 56 years he was a Sunday School teacher.
He devoted 28 years of service to the local Salvation Army.
He was the oldest member of Marion Kiwanis Club and formerly served as its president.
Mr. Clark was a member and former president of the board of the YMCA.
He served on the Ohio Northern University board of trustees for over 50 years and was still a member at the time of his death.
He was the second Republican elected to the office of prosecuting attorney in Marion County, and in 1914 and 1916 he was a candidate for Congress.
Active in recreation, Mr. Clark captained and managed a volleyball team which won the state championship several times. The team was also entered in an international tournament at Philadelphia in 1926 and tied with Brooklyn for seventh place.
He was a member of the K. of P. Lodge 402 and Lodge 70, F &AM.
Mr. Clark married Jennie F. Smith on No. 8, 1899 and she died in January, 1940. In 1944, he married Irene Curliss in Hamilton, who survives.
SURVIVING in addition to the widow is a daughter, Mrs. Gladys Arter of 335 Powhattan St.; two grandchildren, J. C. A. Arter Jr. of 208 S. Main St. and Mrs. Paul Nicolosi of 1363 Trachsel Ave., and a sister Mrs. Alta Stone of South Gate, Calif.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Epworth Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert A. Byler, pastor of Epworth, and F. Bringle McIntosh, president of Ohio Northern University, conducting the service.
Friends may call at the Hughes-Hyll Mortuary after 7:30 p.m. tonight or at the church from 11 a.m. Thursday until the time of the funeral.
Burial will be in Marion Cemetery.
